Welcome
to the Occupational and Aviation Medicine Unit
Welcome to the home page of the Occupational and Aviation Medicine Unit at the University of Otago, Wellington, part of the University of Otago, New Zealand.
The University of Otago offers a wide range of occupational medicine, aviation medicine and aeromedical retrieval and transport courses for both doctors and allied health professionals. Information about all of these can be accessed through this Home Page. Formal teaching programmes are run by the Occupational and Aviation Medicine Unit through the IT interactive distance teaching programme and there is no formal study held in New Zealand. All "live" teaching is undertaken by teleconference or internet tutorials and students are required to leave their normal areas of work only to attend the annual five day Residential School. Personal research is also undertaken by students enrolled with the Department as part of their Diploma, Masters and PhD programmes. However as there is no aerospace medicine laboratory at the University of Otago, Wellington, students' research is based at a facility of their choosing.
The site of Residential Schools vary but recent Schools have been held in Australia, Hong Kong, Fiji, Singapore, Hawaii, New Zealand, Canada, Beijing, Brazil, Canada and Dubai.
Staff of the Occupational and Aviation Medicine Unit are located around the world and form part of an "international department". This permits a collegial learning and research environment without the large overheads of a dedicated teaching and research unit.
