Petrology at the Micro Scale
High temperature, low pressure replacement of eclogite facies garnet by olivine-spinel-plagioclase symplectites and amphibole-plagioclase kelyphites
Petrographic obervations form a foundation of petrological studies. However, aided by detailed isotopic analyses more complete pictures can be drawn. For example, we have extensively worked upon zircon grains from various geological terranes and tectonic settings, and have recently found interesting results regarding the behaviour of zircon during magmatism, metamorphism, and Hf in magma source regions. Detrital zircon grains are useful in interpreting the sedimentation age of units, and an example of the application of detrital zircon grains to Antarctic Geology is presented. We also work with many other microscales; please refer to publications for more examples.
