There are four main areas that students and staff from Otago go to study volcanoes, they are:
- Otago area, South Island, New Zealand
- Taupo Volcanic Zone, North Island, New Zealand
- Southern Victoria Land, Antarctica (Students: Hood Hills, Lockett, McClintock, Ross, Martin)
- South Africa
