How and When to Apply
When?
Both the LLM and PhD programmes may be commenced at any time during the year. For this reason the Law Faculty will consider applications when they are received.
How?
Note that the following instructions are only applicable to the LLM and PhD programmes. If you are interested in pursuing the MBHL, you should consult www.otago.ac.nz/courses/qualifications/mbhl.html and for the MPlan, please consult the Geography Department.
All prospective students are welcome to contact Faculty members directly in the first instance to discuss their research interests, however admission to the Programme will in all cases remain dependant upon the outcome of the formal application procedures described.
Domestic Students
LLM
Step One.
Application must be made to the Division of Humanities. Please refer to the Division of Humanities to download the appropriate application form.
Step Two.
You must also submit a supplementary application form. The supplementary application form may be downloaded here. This form requires that you provide the following.
- CV
- Two academic references (instructions to referees available here)
- A thesis proposal
- Academic transcript
- A personal statement stating why you wish to pursue post-graduate studies at the University of Otago
- A writing sample

PhD
All applications to enter the PhD programme are ultimately referred to the University’s PhD Office and you must comply with their requirements. Background information, including information as to these requirements and the application form is available here. Please use the Direct Application form.
You must also complete the Faculty of Law’s supplementary application form. The form may be downloaded here. There is some overlap in the information required by both forms. The supplementary application form also requires:
- Two academic references (instructions to referees available here)
- A thesis proposal
- Academic transcript
- A personal statement stating why you wish to pursue post-graduate studies at the University of Otago
- A writing sample

International Students
LLM & PhD
Step One.
International students must complete and return the formal Application Form for International Students to the International Office of the University. The form can be found on the website of the International Office.
Step Two.
