Abbey College is the University of Otago's dedicated accommodation for postgraduate and graduate students, and the only residential college of its kind in New Zealand.
Our residents enjoy an independent lifestyle within a purpose-designed academic community, just a few minutes’ walk from the University.
Abbey College is primarily for postgraduate students seeking long-term, convenient and collegial accommodation while they are studying in Dunedin.

Who stays at Abbey College?
- PhD and Master’s by thesis students (for their first year, or for the whole of their degree)
- PGDip and Taught Master’s students
- Health Science first year and subsequent years
- MBA students
- Honours’ year students
- Others in the postgraduate community including postdocs, visiting academics, visiting Fellows
Additional financial support to residents on a PhD scholarship
The University of Otago provides additional support, for Abbey residents receiving a University of Otago PhD scholarship, of $1000 per annum pro-rated.
