About the Department of Accountancy & Finance
Proven excellence and experience
With internationally recognised undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, diverse research expertise, strong links with industry and recognition by a number of international associations and institutes, Otago has proven excellence in Accountancy and Finance education and research.
Accountancy has been taught at Otago since 1912. Together with Finance it is now part of the newest School of Business Department, the Department of Accountancy and Finance, established 2011.
With 18 academic staff and around 1300 students majoring in Accountancy or Finance, the Department is one of the largest in the School of Business.
Producing world-class Accountancy and Finance graduates
The Department works hard to provide an intensive research-led learning experience that prepares students for the realities of the international business environment.
Along with the confidence and independence Otago is known for instilling in its students, this enables our graduates to be strong contenders for the very best jobs in New Zealand and internationally.
International accreditation and professional qualifications
As well as School-wide accreditation with Europe-based EQUIS and USA-based AACSB, the Department has close links with a number of accrediting bodies.
Accountancy students are offered the opportunity to work towards professional qualifications from NZICA and CPA, whilst finance students can choose to work towards CFA certification. The Department is the only New Zealand-based CFA® Program Partner, one of only around 125 CFA-partner universities internationally.
Links with the accounting and finance industry
Many of our academic staff have worked in public and private sector roles prior to joining academia and all have close links with the business community.
With our Community Accounting Initiative, staff and student research projects for business clients, visitor programme and regular guest lecturers, accountancy and finance education at Otago is so much more than learning from textbooks.
