Dr Whiting joined the department in 1992, having previously studied and worked in the fields of chemistry and environmental research and policy. Whilst in the department she has completed her PhD, which was concerned with career progression in the accountancy profession.

Dr Whiting's current research areas of interest are gender issues in the accountancy profession, intellectual capital and intangibles (brands and human resources), business succession planning, and teaching and learning styles of accounting undergraduates. She has published papers in the British Accounting Review, Pacific Accounting Review, Accounting Education: An International Journal, Journal of Human Resource Costing and Accounting, Small Enterprise Research, Bankers Institute of New Zealand Occasional Papers and the three professional accountancy institute journals of Australia, Scotland and New Zealand. She is on the editorial board of Pacific Accounting Review and regularly reviews for this journal as well as for Accounting Education: An International Journal.

Dr Whiting teaches management accounting and is also heavily involved with the Honours programme and dissertation supervision. She is also interested in ethical issues and facilitates on the Foundation Programme’s Ethics workshops for NZICA. In addition Dr Whiting serves on the Management Committee of Dunedin Community Accounting, a voluntary service organisation in which accounting students provide accounting advice to not-for-profit organisations.
