Aspire student volunteers

Kids leaving school can face a daunting series of possible future directions.

Aspire pupils group_dental school_dummy A group of pupils learn the delicate art of dental care.

Deciding which path to take is anything but easy, and for some the simplest option may be to leave education altogether. Our student volunteers seek to motivate their younger peers to stick with their education.

Kickstarted by the Otago University Volunteer Centre and Te Rūnanga o Ōtākau in Dunedin, Aspire matches each pupil with a student ‘coach’ and they work together on stimulating campus-based activities.

Spending a little time working on simulations at the Dental School may open young minds to opportunities in health care. Simple experiments with dry ice can inspire an interest in science. Along the way we help to demystify the University environment, encouraging young people who may never have considered further study to be an option, to follow their dreams through education. Pupils build their confidence and better relationships result.

Your gift can make a difference by helping to pay the bus fare from home to campus, which might otherwise exclude a keen pupil entirely.
