Donor-funded scholarships offer opportunities

The Development and Alumni Relations Office is pleased to announce applications for 2018 Donor Funded Entrance Scholarships will open on 1 November.

These scholarships are aimed at offering new students opportunities in a wide-range of areas, including travel, sport, culture, music and the arts, and undergraduate study.

We sincerely thank our donors and supporters for their generosity, which will enable our future alumni to start their academic journey with experiences that Only Otago can offer.

University of Otago Alumni Appeal Scholarship

Value: $6,000
Number of Scholarships offered: Varies
Closing date: 5 December 2017

To provide scholarships for first year students with a connection to the University of Otago.

Applicants must:
• be a New Zealand citizen or a New Zealand permanent resident
• be intending to enrol or be enrolled in full-time study at the University of Otago for the first time in the year following the closing date
• have at least NCEA Level 2 with merit commendation or equivalent.
Note: Students completing University papers while in their final year of high school are eligible for consideration.

Alumni of the University of Otago in America Inc. Scholarship

Value: $6,000
Number of Scholarships offered: Varies
Closing date: 5 December 2017

Through the generosity of the Alumni of the University of Otago in America Inc, funds have been made available to provide scholarships for high calibre students to attend the University of Otago. These scholarships are offered to students who have demonstrated academic ability and who can show financial need.

Applications are open to intending students who are:
• New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.
• Intending to enrol for full-time undergraduate study at the University of Otago for the first time in the year following the closing date.

University of Otago Alumni in America Inc. Rugby Performance Entrance Scholarship

Value: Up to $16,000 over three years
Number of Scholarships offered: 2 per year
Closing date: 5 December 2017

Established by the University Council in 2017 to encourage excellence in areas of academic achievement and rugby, these scholarships are available to academically strong students who have demonstrated a high-level ability in rugby.

Intending to enrol or have enrolled for the first time for full-time, full-year degree-level, undergraduate study at the University of Otago for the first time in the year following the closing date.

Applicants with NCEA Level 2 with Merit endorsement or better, or equivalent, is normally the minimum eligibility for this scholarship. During the application process, and using the prescribed format, applicants must provide information describing their rugby achievements.

University of Otago Callis Trust Performance Scholarship

Value: $6,000
Number of Scholarships offered: Varies – up to 5
Closing date: 5 December 2017

To encourage excellence in areas of performance including sport, culture, music and the arts, these scholarships are available to academically-able students with demonstrated high-level ability in their chosen area of performance.
Please note, the tenure has been revised to one year of full-time study.

University of Otago Donna-Rose McKay Entrance Scholarship

Value: Standard value of $6,000 (exceptional applicants may be offered this scholarship at a higher value and a longer tenure)
Number of Scholarships offered: varies
Closing date: 5 December 2017

Supported by the donations of Otago graduates, these $6,000 scholarships are available to students who have demonstrated academic ability and who can show financial need arising from a disability. Students with an existing significant disability of at least six months duration are eligible to apply. Academically, NCEA Level 2 with an overall merit commendation, or equivalent, is usually required for consideration.

For applicants of exceptional calibre, this scholarship may be awarded at a higher value and a longer tenure.

University of Otago Law Alumni Scholarship

Value: $6,000 received in the form of reduced residential College fees and/or tuition fees for the first year of study
Number of Scholarships offered: Varies
Closing date: 5 December 2017

The Law scholarships are offered to students who have demonstrated academic ability and who can show financial need.

Applicants must:
• be a New Zealand citizen or a New Zealand permanent resident, or have completed Year 12 and have completed or are in the process of completing Year 13 at a New Zealand school
• be intending to enrol in full-time study in first year law at the University of Otago in the year following the closing date
• have at least NCEA Level 2 with a merit commendation or equivalent.
Note: Students completing University papers while in their final year of high school are eligible for consideration.

The JF Ward Verdon College Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship

Value: $5,000 to be administered against University of Otago residential college or tuition fees
Number of Scholarships offered: 1
Closing date: 1 October 2017

This scholarship aims to support students from Verdon College in Invercargill to undertake undergraduate studies at the University of Otago.

The scholarship is open to students who are:
• Current pupils of Verdon College, Invercargill
• New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
• Enrolled at the University of Otago in the year following application.

Restrictions:
• The successful candidate may not be a recipient of an Invercargill Licensing Trust Scholarship.
• The JF Ward Verdon College Scholarship may be held concurrently with a University of Otago scholarship, subject to the regulations of that scholarship, but the remuneration for the other scholarships may not be paid.
• The JF Ward Verdon College Scholarship may be held concurrently with an external scholarship valued equal to or less than $3,000.

The University of Otago Yarrow South Entrance Scholarship

Value: $5,000
(Note: Two payments – one $4,000 contribution towards residential college fees or if not required then tuition fees; $1,000 final payment in December in the year of study whereby the applicant must have filed the one-page report referred to in the regulations with the Vice-Chancellor who will ratify payment.)
Number of Scholarships offered: Up to two (2) per year
Closing date: 31 October

This Scholarship supports students from King's High School in Dunedin to undertake first-year undergraduate studies at the University of Otago.

Applicants must be intending to enrol full time for first year undergraduate study in a degree-level programme in the year after application.

A scholarship application must normally have been received by the Rector, King's High School, by 31 October. The Rector of King's High School will select the recipients of this scholarship.

Applicants must have attended King's High School for at least one (1) calendar year and the selection criteria will be based on the following factors:
• applicants who have made a substantial contribution to the school, whether academic, sporting, cultural or in other fields; or
• applicants who show outstanding academic ability and would benefit from attending the University of Otago.
• This scholarship may be held concurrently with any other University of Otago scholarship valued at $10,000 or less.

University of Otago 71-73 Alumni Entrance Scholarship

Value: $6,000
Number of Scholarships offered: Varies
Closing date: 5 December 2017

Supported by Mr Frank Leong who has a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Otago. Mr Leong’s aim is to support students undertaking their first year studies at the University of Otago who have shown tenacity in their learning but may not have achieved academic excellence.

This scholarship is open to all New Zealand citizens or permanent residents who have completed Year 12 and have completed or are in the process of completing Year 13 at a New Zealand school.

The student must be intending to enrol for the first time for a full-time degree-level undergraduate study at the University of Otago for the first time in the year following the closing date.
