Evaluating English Accents WorldWide Results: BRAZIL
Brazilian Personality Trait Means
87 State University of Campinas students
53 female, 30 male, 4 missing; mean age 24.1
(collected by Linda Gentry El-Dash)
Brazilian Students' Accent Guesses Majority/plurality percentage
for each speaker in boldface; Major erroneous guesses
Points to Note:
The two General Northern American (USA) voices were correctly identified by approximately half the sample.
While other samples have struggled to identify the Australian and New Zealand voices, this is the first sample to not be familiar with the UK accent, reflecting the historical lack of assocation between Brazil and the UK.
There is essentially no variation in evaluation of power and status by accent. There is a small amount of variation in competence, with the American voices being preferred. This is probably due to a relatively consistent perceived standing of English speakers.
The USA voices (especially the female) are rated highest in solidarity, with the New Zealand male and the two UK voices particularly disliked.
