Transpower University of Otago Applied Science Scholarships
Transpower is a State Owned Enterprise that owns and operates the National electricity grid. Along with its commitment to achieving commercial and operational targets, Transpower has a strong commitment to act as a good corporate citizen. This concept of corporate citizenship includes a commitment to building closer relationships with communities affected by Transpower's activities, and supporting education and research. It is supportive of the objectives of the University of Otago Applied Science Programme, and the important role the University plays in the city of Dunedin and the surrounding region.
The Applied Science programme at the University of Otago represents a powerful integration of science, technology and commercial expertise. The Bachelor of Applied Science is an four-year undergraduate degree available in thirteen subject areas, preparing students for exciting careers in the growing science and technology sectors.
Transpower and the University of Otago are pleased to offer these scholarships to assist outstanding New Zealand students attend the University of Otago's Applied Science Programme. There will be nine scholarships available for award for new or current Applied Science students.
Eligibility
Candidates must be
- entered for the NCEA level 3 examinations or equivalent senior school exam in the year of application, or be a current New Zealand university student
- a New Zealand citizen or a New Zealand permanent resident intending to enrol, or be enrolled, full time for an undergraduate Bachelor of Applied Science degree at the University of Otago
- under 25 years of age
Value
The value of each scholarship is set at $7,000 per annum. Fees payment will be made direct to the Fees Office of the University of Otago with the remainder paid to the scholarship holder in the first semester.
Tenure
The scholarship may be held for up to three years, providing that the scholar continues to achieve at least an A- result average each year and satisfactory progress in all respects. Each scholarship must be taken up in the year in which it is awarded. The scholarship may be held concurrently with other scholarships with approval of the selection panel.
Reports
The scholarship holder must submit a report to the Scholarships Office by 1 December each year on the progress of their studies and outlining their contribution to cultural and/or sporting activities.
Application
The student must submit
- an application form (available from the Undergraduate Scholarships Officer)
- University results (if from another University)
- a statement (max 500 words), written by the individual, outlining the qualities and extra-curricular activities, interests and achievements they feel make them a worthy recipient of the scholarship.
These documents must be sent to the University of Otago Undergraduate Scholarships Officer (Undergraduate Scholarships Officer, Student Administration, University of Otago, PO Box 56, Dunedin, New Zealand) by 20 February.
Candidates should ensure that the two referees they have approached to comment confidentially on the student's academic ability and leadership potential send their references on the official forms to the University of Otago Undergraduate Scholarships Officer by 20 February.
Publicity
Transpower and the University of Otago reserve the right to use the names, photographs, and details of successful applicants for advertising and publicity. The scholarship holders must agree to participate in any reasonable interviews or other promotional activity, if requested by Transpower or the University of Otago.
Other Scholarships for Applied Science Students
There are hundreds of scholarships available to undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Otago. There are some general scholarships but also many that are designed for particular groups of students, for example scholarships may be based on level or course of study, specific project work, ethnicity, or home region or school.
As Applied Science students are generally high achievers, we encourage them to seek out awards that may help them through their study.
