Welcome to the Department of Applied Sciences. This Department was created in 2011 and is the nucleus of the Applied Sciences Programme. It is the home of staff in the disciplines of Bioengineering, Clothing and Textile Sciences and Design for Technology.
The origins of constitutent disciplines Clothing and Textile Sciences can be traced back to the 1920s, and Design back to the 1980s.
Staff in the Department work with internal and external collaborators such as industry and consumer groups. Consultancy services are offered by staff in the department and through the Centre for Bioengineering and Nanomedicine, and the Clothing and Textiles Centre.
Goals of the department
The goals of the Department are to:
- provide an instrument to promote interdisciplinary alliances, e.g. between physicists and clothing and textile scientists, between designers and engineers
- recognise, reinforce and promote interdependence among teaching, research and professional practice
Qualifications and programmes
The Department of Applied Sciences is a department with its own degree stream programme and hosts the BAppSc, BAppSc(Hons), MAppSc and applied PhD qualifications. The Department also serves as an administrative and student centric base for several academic majors currently taught across Sciences.
