ASIA 202/302: Special Topic in Asian Studies
SEMESTER TWO 2011: WRITING SYSTEMS IN EAST ASIAN CULTURES
ONLY OFFERED as ASIA202 (ASIA302: not offered in 2011)
The written form has always carried enormous cultural value in East Asia. This course examines the development of Chinese characters, their use in Korea and Japan, and the appearance of new scripts to supplement or replace them. It also examines the principles behind each script and the role they play in defining national identity. No previous knowledge of Asian languages required.
This course is taught by Drs Wayne Lawrence, Ed McDonald, and Inshil Yoon of The University of Auckland and will be delivered as a distance-learning course to students at the University of Otago. Lectures will be videoed and made available as podcasts; tutorials will be in real time using an AV classroom.
