Stephen ClarkeStephen Clarke
Bachelor of Science with Honours (Biochemistry) and Doctor of Philosophy

Graduate Stephen Clarke has gone full circle, first moving from Hokitika to Otago to study Biochemistry then returning home to work at Westland Milk Products in a research scientist/new product development role.

“My studies definitely helped prepare me for the job,” he says. “While I didn't have any specific training in either dairy or product development, the wide subject range that Biochemistry offers set me up well. Many aspects of my research have also been helpful including critical thinking, technical skills, report writing/presentations and problem solving.”

Stephen chose to study at Otago because of the University's strong international reputation and for the student lifestyle Dunedin offers.

“The Biochemistry staff were really enthusiastic and willing to take time out to talk. The labs and courses were well organised and the subjects were interesting and diverse, setting me up for many potential directions later on.”

Finding a balance between study and life is an important part of being at university, says Stephen.

“I met lots of people and we had a lot of good times, both around Dunedin and on trips away. I also played basketball and hockey, both of which were easy to get involved in.

“Students should try things out, go and meet people, take a couple of interest papers ... to make the most of the Otago student experience.”
