Dunedin campus

Director’s Welcome

Welcome to the Dunedin campus of the Centre for Bioengineering & Nanomedicine, University of Otago. The Centre’s research flagship focuses on Engineered Therapeutics for agricultural and human applications which is underpinned by research in the area of Materials and Devices (see research triangle). We are excited about the translational research opportunities in this field which builds on our sound skills and experience in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Engineered Therapeutics deals with practical and smart solutions for diverse life science sectors. While ”therapeutics” is defined as the treatment and care of humans and animals for the purpose of both preventing and combating disease, “engineered” is based on the word engine which drives from Latin "innate quality, especially mental power, hence a clever invention."1 Examples of Engineered Therapeutics are i.e. targeted drug delivery systems by using clever triggers, tailored treatments of diseases through rapid on site diagnostic followed by selective drug therapy or implants such as gels, bone replacements and nanofibres combined with bioactives among others.

The Centre combines a wide variety of departmental research areas from Divisions of Health Sciences and Sciences, University of Otago such as Anatomy, Applied Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Dentistry, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Pharmacy, Physics and Zoology but also by a large number of commercial and academic collaboration partners.

One objective of the Centre is to provide New Zealand’s and international industry as well as institutions/society a new gateway for exploring and adapting biomedical and scientific innovations from a highly qualified interdisciplinary workforce resulting from excellent applied and pure research. The Centre also provides applied research infrastructure offering a faster translation of smart ideas into the marketplace.

If you are also interested in exploring more about New Zealand’s unique research flagship in Engineered Therapeutics and would like to become a partner, I invite you to contact us.

I hope you enjoy your journey through our website and I am looking forward to hearing from you.
