The Health Sciences at the University of Otago has a long and successful tradition in researching and enhancing therapeutics for many animal and human diseases. One important pathway to further enhance this area is to undertake interdisciplinary research that involves research areas in Sciences, as well as applying sound knowledge and methodologies in technology, engineering and mathematics.
What is Engineered Therapeutics?
Engineered Therapeutics brings together knowledge of the treatment and care for humans and animals to prevent and to combat diseases with engineering methods; providing smart solutions for advanced therapies. Cutting edge applied and pure research involves research topics such as triggered and controlled drug delivery systems, nanomedicine, engineered particles from nano to macro scale, selective and targeted therapies and new therapeutic devices such rapid diagnostic tests, medical imaging tools or implants as well as computational modelling. Applications include treatments for infectious diseases, cancer, wound healing or Parkinsons’ disease among many others. Thus Engineered Therapeutics is supported by two research pillars: Materials and Devices.
