Bioethics Seminar | Resource allocation in psychiatry

Presented by Dr Richard Mullen, Psychiatrist, Southern District Health Board

Limited resources, and therefore dilemmas about resource allocation, are an inescapable part of clinical practice.

Psychiatric practice has its own particular dilemmas based on the nature of psychiatric disorder, the demands made upon it, and its own aspirations. A discussion of this will be offered, in light of several competing ethical principles.

It will be concluded that there is a point of ethical equipoise, a compromise between competing ethical principles, which is unsatisfactory and yet the best available position for a clinician.
