Welcome to the Biolive 09 website

Dates: Sunday 5 July to Wednesday 8 July 2009
Venue: University of Otago, Dunedin

Biolive is the biennial conference for biology educators, run by the New Zealand Association of Science Educators (NZASE). This conference is held in conjunction with the annual meeting of BEANZ (Biology Educators of New Zealand) and is for both primary and secondary teachers and tertiary educators.

Biolive 09 celebrates NZ biology and biology education. Nationally acclaimed scientists will present keynote speeches on the theme "Transformation and Change". These will provide an opportunity for teachers of biology to be stimulated and informed about the new research in our field and look at the global issues that we face. There will also be a focus on updating current thinking on teaching and learning processes for the 21st century biology learner.

Conference delegates will be able to participate in a range of fieldtrips and workshops in biochemistry, botany, marine science, microbiology, physiology and zoology. Other workshops will have a strong pedagogical focus and will support teachers to implement the revised curriculum and the Living World assessment matrix.

Biolive 09 will be a wonderful opportunity to network with and learn from fellow biology educators. We warmly invite you to attend this conference and to contribute to it through workshops and presentations that will interest us all.

Information for Delegates

Airport transport - Dunedin airport is about 30 minutes out of town. You can book the Super Shuttle (0800 748 885) in advance for 1 person $33, 2 people $41 and 3 people $49. Taxi trips cost from $80 into the city.

July is the middle of winter. Hence, Dunedin can get very cold and frosty. Suitable clothing for field trips should include; water proof jacket, thermals, suitable foot wear (that can get muddy), warm hat, gloves and an umbrella. There is also some spectacular wild life on the peninsula so a camera may come in handy.

Where to eat - The conference location (university) is only a short walk (10 min) from George St. Along this street you can find many different ethnic foods (Indian, Satay, Thai). If you continue down George St (south) to the Octagon you can find many different restaurants, cafes and bars.

There are also some really good places to eat close to the university. These include Eureka on Albany St and Ombrellos on Clarendon St.

If you have any other quick questions I can be contacted at psharma@columbacollege.school.nz.
