PhD student Yuan Lu has recently returned from a trip to China where she conducted field research for her thesis on the role of local knowledge in nature reserve management.
Yuan went to Yancheng, Jiangsu province, where she visited the Yancheng National Nature Reserve and interviewed local people, nature reserve staff and researchers.
“Since Yancheng National Nature Reserve is an important stopover and wintering habitat for red crown crane and other migratory bird species of international significance, the local knowledge of local people may contribute significantly to the management of the nature reserve,” says Yuan.
Yuan is now analyzing the data concerning local knowledge about reed ecosystems and red crown crane habitat.
