The Spinal Cord Society NZ Inc.
The Spinal Cord Society NZ Inc. (SCSNZ) is a non-profit organization working towards effective treatment for spinal cord injury (SCI). SCS has established its research laboratory in the CFI of the University of Otago and is engaged on an integrated programme of laboratory and clinical research.
SCS Laboratory projects involve short and medium term translational research on growing cells for use in clinical research protocols. These studies involve adult mesenchymal stem cells and olfactory tissue containing neural stem cells and olfactory ensheathing cells. These two cell types provide the major international focus for cell and tissue therapy in treating SCI. Key elements of the SCSNZ studies are: confirmation of cell phenotypic characteristics and production of cell culture methods that will be safe and acceptable by Medicines Licencing Regulators.
About SCS NZ INC
SCSNZ is a national society established by those with a spinal cord injury and their families, friends and caregivers. It has a strong Health Consumer focus.
Noela Vallis is the visionary behind the New Zealand Spinal Cord Society. Noela’s late husband Keith suffered an accident in 1984 incapacitating him with paraplegia. It was, and still is, Noela’s vision to find a cure for those suffering with spinal injuries. She established the SCSNZ to raise funds to support effective research toward this goal in New Zealand.
