The group's research covers a wide variety of material and supramolecular chemistry. 

They are involved in several gels related projects:

  • Anti-adhesion gels for surgery
  • Medical Adhesives
  • Gel Actuators

A common issue in all these materials is the fragility of the gels.

Three ways of increasing toughness

  • Increased elasticity
    • design of network, very long chains and low crosslink level
  • Increased stiffness
  • Crack stopping
    • crazing or drawing – however both are irreversible
    • composite structure – hard to achieve in a gel on the right scale – reduces elasticity
    • self healing
