What students say about Chinese...
The reason I chose to study Chinese was a curiosity about the culture
and my interest in martial arts. I also like a challenge and thought that
if I can conquer Chinese, anything is possible!
- Fia Auapaau:
100-level student
To me, learning Chinese has never been as hard as most people believe.
Grammatically, it’s comparatively simple, and although the characters
may seem difficult at first, you quickly discover the logic behind them.
I’ve been learning Japanese since high school and have found that
learning both languages is mutually beneficial, as you can see the origins
of many Japanese words in Chinese characters.
- Joey Tarlton:
300-level student
China is a fantastic place to visit, and being able to speak the language
adds a whole dimension to travelling there. It is very rewarding when you
can converse with the Chinese people, find out about their lives and tell
them about yours.

BSc (Hons) – Chemistry
