Senior Lecturer

Xiaohuan was born in Anhui, China. He obtained his B.A. in English Language & Literature, and M.A. in Applied Linguistics (Linguistics & Literature), both from Central China Normal University, and his PhD from the University of Edinburgh. He had taught at Donghua University in Shanghai, and the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow in Scotland before he moved to Edinburgh in the South to take up his current position at Otago.

Research Interests:


His research areas range from Chinese studies to linguistics and literature. Within the area of linguistics and literature, he is interested in cognitive poetics and literary stylistics. In the area of Chinese studies, he is most interested in traditional Chinese literature, particularly traditional Chinese fiction and drama. He is also interested in pre-Qin (220-26 BC) Chinese classics, Chinese intellectual history, and Chinese ghost culture.

Postgraduate Supervision:

Currently under the supervision with Xiaohuan as principal supervisor are three PhD students.

Xiaohuan welcomes applications from research students who wish to work in the following areas:

• Traditional Chinese literature (TCL)
• Religious and Folk Beliefs in TCL
• Linguistic Analysis of TCL Texts
