Māori Indigenous Health Institute (MIHI)
The opening of the Māori/Indigenous Health Institute (MIHI) represents a major milestone in the development of Māori-focused teaching and research at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Otago, Christchurch.
Medicine
The Department of Medicine plays a key role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, underpinned by internationally renowned research.
Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Obstetrics and Gynaecology has very active research and teaching programmes. Our teaching has been awarded student prizes. Our international research uses both clinical and laboratory approaches, and we have collaborations and interdisciplinary links.
Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Medicine
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Medicine is unique in New Zealand in that both the Academic and Service Departments combine the surgical and medical components of musculoskeletal diseases and injuries into one department.
Paediatrics
Our teaching programme has been developed to provide undergraduate (Med V and VI) and postgraduate (Diploma of Child Health) education in Neonatology, Paediatric Medicine, Paediatric Surgery (section of paediatric surgery), Community Paediatrics and Child Health, and subspecialty areas of Neurology, Genetics and Child Cancer.
Pathology
The Department of Pathology is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, combined with internationally renowned research.
Psychological Medicine
The Department continues to be actively involved in the teaching of Psychological Medicine to medical students. The Department is also responsible for the academic programme for Christchurch’s successful psychiatric registrar training programme.
Public Health and General Practice
The joint department is unique in New Zealand in bringing together Public Health and General Practice/Primary Care teaching and research groups.
Surgery
The University Department of Surgery is embedded within Christchurch Hospital and is closely related to the units delivering clinical services. There are separate offices for the academic head (Professor Frank Frizelle) and the clinical director responsible for general surgery.
