4th, 5th and 6th years of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) at the University of Otago, Christchurch
In the fourth and fifth year, the class is divided into 6 equal sized groups and each group rotates through six five week attachment blocks. In sixth (or trainee intern) year, attachments range from 4 to 12 weeks in duration.
Throughout the years, a series of verticle modules are run. These are based on the important learning themes and are mostly delivered during the time students spend on blocks. They represent areas which are integral to most areas of medical practice and which cannot (and should not) be separated e.g. ethics
There are two opportunities to see patients over a more prolonged period:
- in fourth year over a ten week period during the general practice and health care of the elderly runs
- between fifth and sixth year, to see a child.
