Performing Cicero's Speeches: An Experimental Workshop

A video by Robin Bond and Jon Hall

In this video Prof. Robin Bond (Canterbury, New Zealand) performs in Latin nine passages from Cicero's speeches. Together with Dr Jon Hall (Otago, New Zealand) he discusses the gestures that Cicero would have used in his delivery, and the importance of viewing oratory as a performance art, not just a written text.

This video will be of interest to teachers who want to help their students recreate the original context, power and impact of Roman oratory. Passages performed include four extracts from Pro Caelio, and one each from Pro Ligario, Pro Archia, Pro Milone, In Catilinam II and Philippic 6. (35 mins)

In the USA, copies can be ordered online from Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers (see www.bolchazy.com). For copies in PAL format (for video players in the UK and Australasia) please contact Jon Hall directly by email at jon.hall@stonebow.otago.ac.nz
