Welcome to the Department of Media, Film and Communication
Communication Studies
Communication Studies at Otago focuses on the role of media in the
social world. It is concerned with how media are used at individual,
group, regional, national and global levels to achieve important or
valued purposes. Media uses are assessed critically with concern about
intended and unintended, desirable and undesirable consequences for
individuals, nations, and the world. Strategies for using media effectively
and ethically are considered. See more...
MFCO305 is no longer a required paper for the COMS majors and is not being offered in 2012. In its place, students can select another 300-level paper from those set out in the Communication Studies degree regulations. Students can be assured they will not be disadvantaged by the change and they are welcome to contact the department at mfco@otago.ac.nz if they have any questions. |
Film and Media Studies
Film and Media Studies focuses on the historical, aesthetic, cultural
and social significance of cinema, television and new visual technologies
and their interconnections. It is concerned with the teaching of visual
literacy as it applies to moving images since the advent of modernity
and beyond, and looks both at dominant practices (Hollywood cinema,
global media, mass-entertainment), and alternative practices (art
cinema, the avant-garde and local and indigenous media). See
