Honours in Film, Media Studies Communication Studies

The aim of the Honours degree is to provide students with advanced education and better preparation for their future careers. The BA Honours is recognised as a more advanced degree, with more papers in Film and Media Studies or Communication Studies and with a strong research component at the 400-level. Generally, students interested in enrolling in a Master of Arts degree by thesis only must normally have completed an Honours degree or Postgraduate Diploma or equivalent in the subject concerned or a related subject.

Entry Requirements

The BA Honours is a four-year programme, which you can enter at second, third or even fourth year:

  • To be admitted to a second year Honours course, an applicant must have passed at a satisfactory level (B average) papers worth at least 126 points for the degree of Bachelor of Arts. These papers shall normally include papers worth 36 points in Film and Media Studies or Communication Studies, or in each of the subjects, in which the Honours programme is to be taken.
  • To be admitted directly to a third year Honours course without having passed second year Honours, an applicant must normally have passed at a satisfactory level (B average) papers worth at least 252 points, including at least 90 points for 200-level papers. The 200-level papers shall normally include papers worth 54 points in Film and Media Studies or Communication Studies.
  • To be admitted directly to a fourth year Honours course without having passed the corresponding second and third year Honours courses, an applicant must normally have passed papers worth 360 points, have fulfilled at least one of the major subject requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, have not been admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and have a grade average of at least B+ over 72 points at 300 level, normally in Film and Media Studies or Communication Studies or subjects in which the Honours programme is to be taken.
