Continuing Education

Continuing education provides a particularly important means of sharing the University's expertise with the wider community while, and the same time, supporting lifelong learning. This area is, therefore, a key point of the University of Otago's strategic focus for community service.

Continuing education at Otago comprises a wide range of activities, including courses which may be either informal or assessed, but which do not lead to the award of a formally recognized qualification. It includes community-based education, continuing professional development (CPD) courses, and open or public lectures.

Summer School & Continuing Education is located in the west wing of IS Building opposite Student Information Centre and adjacent to the Student Learning Centre.

Music

Three short courses are being offered in 2013, each course related to a Southern Sinfonia International Series concert performed in the Town Hall, Dunedin.

  • 27 May - Saint-Saens' Organ Symphony, presented by Dr Andrew Deruchie.
  • 5 August - From Russia with Love, presented by Dr Graeme Downes.
  • 16 September - Journey into Central Europe, presented by Professor John Drummond.

Music short courses are held in the Lecture Room, Black/Sale House, corner of St David and Leith Streets, Dunedin between 5.30 and 7pm.  One course costs $25, and all three courses cost $55.  Registrations are essential, and registration forms are available here or by phoning Summer School & Continuing Education, 03 4799181.  Course numbers are limited.

48th University of Otago Foreign Policy School - Pacific Geopolitics in the 21st Century - 28 to 30 June 2013

The School this year is Pacific Geopolitics in the 21st Century.

The earlybird date for registrations has been extended to Saturday, 15 June 2013.

Dance

The Dance Studies Programme offers community adult classes in AfroContemporary Dance, Ballet Elementary and Intermediate, Contemporary Dance/Movement Exploration, Modern Dance and West African Dance. Walk-ins are welcome.

Refund Policy for University of Otago short courses

Where a refund policy particular to a non-credit short course has not been specified in course promotional/registration material, the following policy shall normally apply:

  • For withdrawal up to seven working days before course commencement, an administration fee of 10% will be retained;
  • For withdrawal less than seven working days before course commencement, a refund of 50% may be made at the discretion of the Course or Programme Director;
  • Once a course has commenced, no refund will be given
  • The University reserves the right to cancel a course due to insufficient enrolments or other unforeseen circumstances. In such cases, fees will be refunded in full.

Guidelines for resolving problems

The following principles and procedures have been adopted by the University of Otago for addressing academic concerns or grievances that an Adult and Community Education (ACE) student may have relating to a short course, seminar, workshop or other similar event.

Principles

  • Matters should be notified and addressed quickly, fairly, and as close as possible to the point of origin. (This will usually be with those directly involved in the delivery or organisation of the event.)
  • The student may, with good reason, seek resolution of the matter at a higher level than that of the person(s) most immediately involved.

Procedures

Step 1: In the first instance, the student should raise, discuss and seek resolution of the matter with the event's facilitator/tutor.

Step 2: If there is good reason for not raising the matter directly with the facilitator/tutor, or if the student is of the opinion that the matter has not been appropriately resolved at that level, then the student may request a meeting with the next level of management.

This will vary depending on the nature of the event and auspices under which it was being offered. In some instances the next level of management may be a Head of Department, in others a Programme Director. (Information on the appropriate person to approach is available from the University's Advisor, Continuing Education.)

Both parties may invite a representative or support person to the meeting.

Step 3: If the matter remains unresolved after Steps 1 and/or Step 2, then the student may refer it, in writing, to the level of Dean or Pro-Vice-Chancellor (PVC).
