It is assumed that students have no prior knowledge of Old English language. It is advantageous to have had some experience learning another language and to know about basic grammatical terminology.

  • Develop the critical skills that facilitate the reading of medieval literature in the light of the cultural and literary traditions of the period
  • Understand the critical debates surrounding the literary interpretation of Beowulf and its place in Anglo-Saxon culture
