MFCO332 Special Topic: Digital Asia

Digital Asia provides an opportunity for students to engage critically and creatively with contemporary approaches to Asian digital media and communications.

The paper examines the role of digital communications media in the constitution of 'Asia' as a coherent, cultural, geographical space. Topics discussed in this paper include the intersection between digital communication policy, creative enterprise and national identity; cultural proximity and 'pan-Asian' digital media; and methodological approaches to Asia. Digital Asia considers multiple modes for engaging with Asia - including critical theoretical research, as well as creative approaches. Students will complete a critically informed 'profile' of an Asian media and communications field and an essay or a creative response with theoretical exegesis.

Paper Structure
The paper covers three key themes in thinking of Asia as a key site of digital media production and consumption through the following frameworks:
  • Understanding Asia through contemporary mediated representations
  • Constituting Asia through cultural institutions relating to digital media production
  • Engaging Asia through the application of digital media frameworks to a creative project or critical theoretical essay
Assessment:
  • Take-home test 25%
  • Research report and oral presentation 35%
  • Creative response and theoretical exegesis or theoretical essay 40%

  • Employ appropriate strategies for communicating research data to a range of audiences, including non-academic audiences
  • Reflect on the ethics of researching Asian communications.
  • Comprehend the socio-cultural context of contemporary Asian communications institutions, practices and issues
  • Demonstrate independent research skills, including critical and creative thinking and advanced written communications
  • Work effectively in a group to meet assessment guidelines
