PSME427 Interpersonal Psychotherapy

Outlines the processes involved in establishing interpersonal psychotherapy into a mental health service, allowing individuals to gain an advanced knowledge of the theory and skills of interpersonal psychotherapy.

Graduates who have completed this paper will have a qualification as a competent interpersonal psychotherapy practitioner. This is a very useful and advantageous competency when seeking employment for/or advancing work in a health care setting. This can also be used as the foundation for training as a supervisor of this therapy, another useful clinical skill of interest to health employees. It may also be used within a research environment.

Course outline
Eligibility
Suitable for individuals with a health background and experience of working with mental health disorders. Applicants must show a basic understanding of interpersonal psychotherapy, normally by having successfully completed and passed either PSME 425 Introduction to Interpersonal Psychotherapy or PSME 426 Advanced Applications of Interpersonal Psychotherapy or by proof of attendance at an approved interpersonal psychotherapy workshop.

Teaching Arrangements
Four 3-day block compulsory workshops in Christchurch over a full academic year. Attendance at block courses is compulsory.

There will also be 17 group supervision sessions of three hours' duration. A logbook will be used to document skills.

After successfully completing the paper a student should
  • Have an understanding of the basic principles, practice and research of IPT
  • Have a basic understanding of the ethical and legal issues related to IPT
  • Demonstrate effective communication and liaison with others using an IPT model
  • Develop and become proficient at critically analysing, interpreting data and problem solving
  • Be able to locate, organise, synthesise and apply information in order to understand the psychotherapy process in IPT
