Study Community Nutrition at Otago

Overview

The need for formal education in community nutrition for health professionals involved in nutrition counselling, health promotion and prevention of lifestyle diseases has become more apparent with the advent of the "new public health". The University of Otago has traditionally been responsible for tertiary-level human nutrition education in New Zealand.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Science (PGDipSci) in Community Nutrition is designed principally for health and education professionals such as dietitians, nurses, pharmacists, general practitioners, and health education and home economics teachers, and will provide a sound educational background for their work. It should be noted, however, that the Diploma is a tertiary, not a professional, qualification.

Entry to the course is open to those with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree or equivalent qualification, and those with an acceptable tertiary-level registrable nursing or pharmacy qualification. High academic achievement in previous course work, and employment (or intended employment) in an occupation in which community nutrition forms an important part, are additional entry criteria. As well as graduates, non-graduates with a tertiary qualification may apply for enrolment in the Diploma for Graduates. Students must be resident in New Zealand.

Some background in nutrition is strongly recommended. For those who have not previously studied human nutrition at tertiary level, it is recommended that they enrol extramurally for 214.131 Introduction to Food and Nutrition at Massey University prior to commencing this Diploma.

It is important that potential students contact the Programme Co-ordinator prior to initial registration in order to discuss eligibility.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Science (PGDipSci) in Community Nutrition is only available through Distance Learning.
