Study Human Services at Otago

No new enrolments will be accepted for Human Services as a major or minor subject.

Overview

Human Services papers prepare students for work in social services, including social work assistants, community work, justice and youth work. The papers provide knowledge about family patterns, family forms and the way people grow and develop throughout their lifespan in a variety of cultural contexts. This knowledge is linked to practical methods of working in individual, family and organisational settings to enhance development and solve problems through positive social change. At the community, regional and iwi levels, larger scale social networks are examined in terms of work and community life and the manner in which people interact. In the face of social change and problems of income, employment, health and social problems, strategies for change and resolution are developed.
