The Centre for Translational Research in Chronic Diseases (CTRCD)

The Centre for Translational Research in Chronic Diseases (CTRCD) provides expert skills and research training to tackle the need for changes in individuals' behaviours and in the environments which currently promote ill-health.

Obesity will be an initial focus of research as it is a leading preventable cause of many chronic diseases in New Zealand and worldwide. Diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and cancers at several important sites are all strongly associated with obesity, and the consequences of obesity for respiratory disease, bone-health, arthritis and mental health also demand action.

The Centre is closely related to the Edgar National Centre for Diabetes Research which is situated in the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences but its members are drawn from several other departments within the University of Otago and other universities.
