Head of College
Cumberland College is under the management of the Head of College who works closely with the Cumberland College Council, and the University of Otago accommodation management team. The Head of College is responsible for the overall administration of the college, for the college’s ceremonial life, for resident welfare and community building, for planning and management of finances and physical plant, for the establishment of rules and regulations, and for representing the needs of the college to the university.
The Head of College is Mr Nick Bates. He is joined at the College by his wife and children.
Deputy Head of College
The Deputy Head of College is responsible for the College community building program, tutorial program, training and management of the Residential Assistant team.
The Deputy Head of College is Rosemary Tarbotton. Rosemary, who also happens to be a registered nurse, lives on-site with her husband Gavin and her youngest daughter Grace.
Residential Manager – Cumberland Court
The Residential Manager – Cumberland Court is responsible for the care and welfare of Cumberland Court residents, training and management of the Court Residential Assistant team, management of the Cumberland Court facility, Court community building program and academic program.
The Residential Manager – Cumberland Court is Mr Sandy McNicol. Sandy has worked in education, accommodation and mental health industries. He is joined at the College by his wife Sarah.
Finance and Administration Manager
The Finance and Administration Manager is responsible for the creation and management of the College budget, ensuring residents fees are paid as required and oversees the administrative operations of the College.
The Finance and Administration Manager is Mrs Elizabeth Whangapirita. Elizabeth worked for the University of Otago’s Financial Services Division for many years before joining the team at Cumberland.
The Property Manager is responsible for the overall management of the College buildings and grounds, including the running of College utilities and repairs and maintenance.
The Property Manager is Rod Knights. Rod is a qualified electrician who has worked on the College building since it opened in 1989.
The Executive Chef is responsible for the management of the College kitchen and Dining Hall. The Dining Hall is at the heart of our community and the College kitchen produces over 1000 meals per day.
The Executive Chef is Kevin Strange. Kevin is a highly skilled and experienced chef who once headed the kitchen for Government House in Wellington.
Assistant Head Nights
The Assistant Head Nights is responsible for the management and welfare of the Cumberland community in the evening the throughout the night.
