Obesity treatment will be offered to parents of about 200 South Island children next year. The Triple P Lifestyles programme, which was developed at Queensland University, has been recommended by the South Island Alliance of district health boards (SIA) following an extensive review of available programmes.

The South Island Alliance has been looking at the issue of obesity in childhood, given that one third of 2 to 14 year-olds are obese or overweight, according to the New Zealand Health Survey published in 2014.

Professor Barry Taylor, EDOR member and Dean of the Dunedin School of Medicine, is a member of the SIA Child Health committee.  He reports that the committee is suggesting a co-ordinated approach across all the South Island DHB's. He acknowledges that society-wide changes are also needed to address the increase in childhood obesity.
