A recent report by two UK charities argues for increasing the fat in our diet, including saturated fat. But many experts in the UK and New Zealand do not agree.

Professor Jim Mann, director of the Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research Centre at the University of Otago, has been interviewed by Jesse Mulligan at Radio NZ about high fat versus low fat diets, as well as the role of sugar and carbohydrate in our diet.

The take-home message is that replacing saturated fats with healthy fats, such as polyunsaturated oils, and eating complex carbohydrates such as wholegrains and legumes, is the way to go.
