Welcome to EARU

The Educational Assessment Research Unit works to improve the New Zealand educational curriculum.

Working with the Ministry of Education we run the National Monitoring Study of Student Achievement (NMSSA) – Wānangatia Te Putanga Tauira.

The purpose of the NMSSA study is to:

  • provide a snapshot of student achievement at Year 4 and Year 8 in English-medium state schools
  • identify factors associated with achievement
  • measure change in student achievement over time
  • provide high quality information for policy makers, curriculum planners and educators

We have also worked on the National Education Monitoring Project (NEMP) – the predecessor to NMSSA.

EARU is based in Dunedin, New Zealand with a core staff of nine dedicated individuals.
