Bachelor of Education Studies (BEdSt) endorsed with an area of specialisation & Graduate Diploma in Education and Teaching (GradDipEdTchg) endorsed in Primary Education

Overview

This three year degree Bachelor of Education Studies (BEdSt) endorsed with an area of specialisation and one year Graduate Diploma in Education and Teaching (GradDipEdTchg) endorsed in Primary Education prepares graduates to teach in the primary and intermediate sector, years one to eight (children ranging in ages from 5 to 13 years).  

Together, the two qualifications constitute an enhanced teaching qualification totalling 486 points, registered at Level 7 on the New Zealand Register of Quality Assured Qualifications.  Part-time options are also available during the first three years.  The programmes are available both in Dunedin and Invercargill, however in order to complete the requirements of the BEdSt, students would normally be required to spend the third year of the programme in Dunedin.

On completion of four years of study graduates will be eligible for apply for provisional teacher registration and access Q3+ salary status.

Each qualification has four strands:

Papers address professional teaching issues, subject knowledge, education theory, practical teaching experience and the requirements of the New Zealand Curriculum.

The Bachelor of Education Studies features a year of specialisation which allows students to specialise in a subject or curriculum area at an advanced level; providing opportunities for a practice internship and to undertake studies in the university outside of the College of Education.

Admission

Primary Teacher Education Admission is by selection and is based on academic performance, involvement in appropriate activities (such as music, sport, community, and cultural activities), and the personal qualities that are essential for those who wish to become teachers.  Application forms can be downloaded from this website.
