Overview

Te Pōkai Mātauranga offers the unique opportunity to become qualified as a primary teacher with increased knowledge of Te Ao Māori.

People with a desire to develop their own knowledge in Te Ao Māori and who are enthusiastic about teaching children are encouraged to apply.

Primary Bilingual Education Programmes

The following two undergraduate primary bilingual bachelor-degree programmes may be an option if you share an interest in Te Ao Māori. For admission requirements and how the application process works, please refer to this page.

Programme Content

You will study the following in both the Bachelor of Teaching and the Bachelor of Education Studies – Primary Bilingual Education degrees:

Ako Tohunga – Professional Studies and Professional Practice

Develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes essential to becoming a creative and skilled professional.

There will be specific development of key concepts and understanding within Te Ao Māori.

In the Professional Practice papers you will develop and extend knowledge and improve skills through a progressive programme of teaching practice each year in a variety of primary and intermediate schools, supervised by associate teachers and college lecturers.

Akoranga Marau Mātauranga – Curriculum Studies

Cover the content and the methods of delivery of the New Zealand curriculum of primary and intermediate schools. There will be an introduction to Te Marautanga o Aotearoa for Māori medium and Te Reo Māori in the New Zealand curriculum.

Ako Whakauranga – Education Studies

Examine the theories of how people learn and the socio-cultural factors that influence them. This provides a theoretical base for teaching.

Whaia Akonga – Subject Studies

This includes two papers which will provide opportunities to develop indepth knowledge in Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori.
