What traditional teaching and learning methods of yesteryear, for example those amongst Ngā Whare Wānanga o Waikato Tainui, are evident or would still have relevance in a modern learning environment today?  Given the practices that underpin the Kīngitanga, for example koroneihana, rīkata and poukai, how is knowledge about critical roles transmitted from one generation to the next?   “Waikato Tainui has a rich heritage of pepeha, tongi and whakatauki.  How do these sources of inspiration develop modern responses to modern challenges (in an educational context)?”.  These three components make up the primary focus of my research project.

There are two principal outcomes of this project.  The first is the production of research as a PhD which will provide literature contributing to Māori studies and the second  will be the production of research contributing to the ‘Reclaiming Traditional Frameworks’ section of the Draft Waikato Tainui Education Strategy 2008-2012.  It may include a proposed model that incorporates these methods (if any) into today’s learning environments specifically for Waikato Tainui use but adaptable for use by iwi nationally as well as globally.
