Applying to an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programme

Our Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes enable you to become a qualified teacher in Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary Education. 

Restricted entry applies to these programmes - you must apply and be offered a place.  Applications are to be submitted online.

To be sure teaching is the career path for you, it is strongly recommended that intending applicants approach a school or centre, to arrange to spend a day observing a typical day’s teaching, prior to submitting your application.

Application dates

Late applications for 2018 are being considered, but it is recommended that you submit your application as soon as possible.

Applications for the following undergraduate/graduate programmes open on 1 MAY annually, and are preferred by 31 AUGUST:

  • Bachelor of Teaching (BTchg)
    Three-year undergraduate degree endorsed in Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, or Te Pōkai Mātauranga o te Ao Rua (Primary Bicultural Education).
  • Graduate Diploma in Teaching (GradDipTchg)
    One-year graduate diploma endorsed in Early Childhood Education (offered at the Dunedin Campus only).
  • Graduate Diploma in Education and Teaching (GradDipEdTchg)
    One-year graduate diploma for Bachelor of Education Studies (BEdSt) graduates only. 

Applications for the following postgraduate programmes open on 1 MAY annually, and are due by 31 JULY:

  • Master of Teaching and Learning (MTchgLn)
    One calendar year postgraduate degree endorsed in Primary Education or Secondary Education.

 Prospective students are strongly advised to submit applications before the due dates (listed above).

Application closing dates for various other Postgraduate programmes and Education Studies courses offered at the Dunedin Campus may be later than 31 August, so please refer to the Postgraduate information or contact the College of Education for details.

If you wish to apply for a postgraduate MTchgLn programme, please refer to Information for new MTchgLn applicants.  Intending MTchgLn (Secondary Education) applicants can check the minimum requirements (pre-requisites) for each secondary school teaching subject, by referring to the table of Secondary Curriculum Subjects.
