Lowry studied at St. Catharine's College, Cambridge, from 1929-32, graduating with third-class honours in English. Hugh Firmin went to St. Catharine's, but the Consul attended Trinity College, whose great fountain reminds him of the promise that his life subsequently did not fulfil.
