The English Programme at Otago
The Department of English and Linguistics at the University of Otago has a distinguished record of teaching and research. It offers both a major and a minor in English literature, a minor in Writing, and also hosts the Programme in Linguistics, and the Scottish and Irish Studies Programmes.
In addition to a three-year BA course and a four-year BA Honours programme, the Department offers the Postgraduate Diploma in English, the MA, and the PhD.

Upcoming Conference
In April 2014 the Department of English and Linguistics will be hosting a conference examining the presence of Medieval themes and paradigms in Modernism. A full description can be found here.
Fringe Effects...
Dunedin's 10th Fringe Festival runs from 14-24 March, and many members of the English Department are taking part. Look for contributions from grad students like Sharon Matthews, Loveday Why, and Lynley Edmeades, lecturer Dr Sandra Muller, and even our new Burns Fellow David Howard. Denmark's Greatest Export...
As of last week, our Departmental Administrator Liz Lammers has been working at the University of Otago for 20 years. She joined the Department of English and Linguistics in 2006 and has made it a better place. We mark this milestone with profound gratitude and commend Liz for her Atlas-like efforts.
A Visit from Lord Tennyson...
On Tuesday 12 February Emeritus Professor John Batchelor (Newcastle, UK) spoke at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery about his new biography Tennyson: To Strive, To Seek, To Find. Tom McLean hosted the lecture, and among the listeners was none other than David, Lord Tennyson, a great-great grandson of the poet. Lord Tennyson posed with Batchelor and McLean before the work of another great Victorian artist, Edward Burne-Jones.
