The Graduate Diploma in Second Language Teaching is an academically focused course of study, designed for graduates and others with equivalent qualifications or experience, who do not have a prior knowledge of Linguistics and/or Language Teaching as an academic discipline but who wish to have a good grounding in Language Teaching with a view to obtaining a nationally and internationally recognised named diploma in Second Language Teaching. This graduate diploma is designed to meet the rapidly increasing demand for language teachers, especially teachers of English as a second language, both here in New Zealand and overseas. It also aims to provide those who hold certificates in TESOL or similar qualifications with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge or understanding of Second Language Teaching.

Note: LING 111 or its equivalent, if already passed, may be replaced by either LING 214 or LING 215. |
LING 319, LING 419, and LING 317 directly concern second/foreign language teaching and learning, whereas LING 212 provides a good grounding in basic sociolinguistic concepts and theories useful for understanding the social context in which second/foreign language teaching and learning are situated. LING 111 provides a solid theoretical foundation in the principal subfields of linguistics, crucial for the understanding of the specialised papers in second/foreign language teaching.
