Postgraduate students

Choosing a Postgraduate course of study

The course of study that is right for you will depend on:

  • Your background - What have you already studied, and to what level?
  • What your interests are.
  • What area of study or employment you are aiming for after you complete your course.

The Department of Food Science offers a range of courses with different focuses and entry requirements. Find out what we can offer, and what each course requires on the postgraduate information page.

Research students - Finding a supervisor

As a potential research student (PhD or Master's thesis), you need to be well-prepared, and show initiative and aptitude.

Prior to application, you need to find a supervisor and confirm a project or area of study with them. To do this you must:

  1. Find an area you are interested in on the Department Research Themes page or follow the links to the staff members individual profile pages to view their specific areas of expertise.

  2. Contact the Postgraduate Administrator at foodscience.postgrad@otago.ac.nz and explain your area of interest and staff members that you may want as Supervisors. Please include your C.V, English translated educational transcripts and contact details of two academic referees.

  3. Once the Postgraduate Administrator has assessed your initial email and information sent, only then will your details be passed on to the relevant academics and they will contact you for further information.

Scholarships

Please note that Otago University PhD scholarships are highly competitive, please discuss your chances of receiving one with your prospective supervisor. You should be prepared to fund your study through alternative means.
