Founded in 1943 by Colonel J Cowie Nichols, who in that year gave 500 pounds to the Council of the University of Otago for the establishment of a prize in the Home Science Faculty, to mark his appreciation of the value of the services rendered to the Home Science School by Professor A G Strong OBE.

An essay prize was offered annually until 1984. In 1985 four separate prizes were instituted.
