Genetics Journal Club
The Genetics Journal Club (GJC) was founded in 2003 by Professor Antony Braithwaite and is currently managed by PhD student Rebecca Debono.
Widely publicised across campus, the GJC has grown substantially in recent times, with attendance regularly exceeding 50. Notably, there has been a steady increase in attendees from outside the Genetics Program which clearly illustrates the growing importance of genetics across a wide range of research areas.
Every session involves 2 speakers - a member of academic staff and a genetics postgraduate student, whose talks in recent times have become increasingly professional, with many outstanding presentations. Speakers are asked to present recent and important genetics papers (e.g. from Science/Nature) with broad appeal to a wider scientific audience. Papers presented are often outside the presenter's area of primary expertise and there is ample time for discussion at the end of each talk, with student participation strongly encouraged.
With a strong emphasis on critical assessment of the published work rather than simple 'recapitulation', GJC's goal is to promote critical and independent thinking in our emerging researchers across campus.
It is recommended that all genetics postgraduate students attend, not only as part of their professional development but in order to support their fellow students.
Pizzas are served during every session - this is a lunchtime event, after all...
The GJC convenes every Wednesday fortnight at 1pm in the Benham Semjinar Room at the Department of Zoology during normal semester time. For further information please contact:
