Research at Genetics Otago

Genetics Otago is the largest centre for advanced genetics research in Australasia. We focus on 7 main themes, which cover the full spectrum of genetics research.

Applied genetics research

Our researchers are at the forefront of selecting and producing new traits for biologically-based industries. These industries are the backbone of the New Zealand economy.

Developmental genetics research

We study genes and development in numerous vertebrates and invertebrates. We work to identify genes associated with human developmental disease, and on epigenetics, and human and plant biology.

Evolution research

We use genomics and modern sequencing techniques to study the relationships between animals, reproduction, and behaviour. By comparing DNA sequences from different species, we can also reconstruct their evolutionary history and the history of the environment.

Genomics research

Our researchers experts specialise in analysing genomic data and developing new tools to analyse genomes and transcriptomes. Our genome mining studies focus on genes, transposons, and SNPs.

Law, ethics, and society research

Rapid advances in genetics create dilemmas for medicine, ethics and the law. The range of appropriate responses must be based on careful and coherent consideration of ethical, legal, and public policy issues.

Microbial research

Our researchers study the biology of these organisms, including how viruses interact with other organisms and the immune system, and how they might be harnessed to deliver health benefits.
